Conjunctive Query Evaluation by Search Tree Revisited

چکیده

The most natural and perhaps most frequently used method for testing membership of an individual tuple in a conjunctive query is based on searching trees of partial solutions, or search-trees. We investigate the question of evaluating conjunctive queries with a time-bound guarantee that is measured as a function of the size of the optimal search-tree. We provide an algorithm that, given a database , a conjunctive query , and a tuple , tests whether holds in in time bounded by a polynomial in and , where is the size of the domain of the database, is the number of bound variables of the conjunctive query, is the size of the optimal search-tree, and is the maximum arity of the relations. In many cases of interest, this bound is significantly smaller than the ! bound provided by the naive search-tree method. Moreover, our algorithm has the advantage of guaranteeing the bound for any given conjunctive query. In particular, it guarantees the bound for queries that admit an equivalent form that is much easier to evaluate, even when finding such a form is an NP-hard task. Concrete examples include the conjunctive queries that can be non-trivially folded into a conjunctive query of bounded size or bounded treewidth. All our results translate to the context of constraint-satisfaction problems via the well-publicized correspondence between both frameworks. " Partially supported by CICYT TIC2001-1577-C03-02 1

Combined Tractability of Query Evaluation via Tree Automata and Cycluits (Extended Version)

We investigate parameterizations of both database instances and queries that make query evaluation fixed-parameter tractable in combined complexity. We introduce a new Datalog fragment with stratified negation, intensional-clique-guarded Datalog (ICG-Datalog), with linear-time evaluation on structures of bounded treewidth for programs of bounded rule size. Such programs capture in particular co...

Kernel-based Similarity Search in Massive Graph Databases with Wavelet Trees

Similarity search in databases of labeled graphs is a fundamental task in managing graph data such as XML, chemical compounds and social networks. Typically, a graph is decomposed to a set of substructures (e.g., paths, trees and subgraphs) and a similarity measure is defined via the number of common substructures. Using the representation, graphs can be stored in a document database by regardi...

A fuzzy set approach to concept-based information retrieval

In this paper an information retrieval approach is proposed based on the use of a fuzzy conceptual structure used both to index document and to express user queries. The conceptual structure is hierarchical and it encodes the knowledge of the topical domain of the considered documents. It is formally represented as a weighted tree. The evaluation of conjunctive queries is based on the compariso...

On the Intersection of Inverted Lists

In this paper, we discuss an efficient and effective index mechanism to support set intersections, which are important to evaluation of conjunctive queries by search engines. The main idea behind it is to decompose an inverted list associated with a word into a collection of disjoint sub-lists by arranging a set of word sequences into a trie structure. Then, by using a kind of tree encoding, we...

Query expansion based on relevance feedback and latent semantic analysis

Web search engines are one of the most popular tools on the Internet which are widely-used by expert and novice users. Constructing an adequate query which represents the best specification of users’ information need to the search engine is an important concern of web users. Query expansion is a way to reduce this concern and increase user satisfaction. In this paper, a new method of query expa...
